PROCEDURES
Here is a list of steps to help you follow through out the portrait commission procedure. Many of my clients are
surprised to find out that this process is quick and will take up very little of their precious time. Due to the time that it takes to create a work, some clients may have to be
placed on a waiting list..
After an interested client makes initial contact with me, I will schedule a first meeting with them.
This meeting may either take place at the client’s home or at my studio. I will show them all pertinent portfolio pieces and then discuss with them what their vison is for their commission. We will establish the size painting the client is looking for, the location and setting that will be represented in the painting, wardrobe, jewelry and any other special wishes the client has. If the client is certain at that time that he wishes to retain my services, we will sign a contract agreement in order to place them on my waiting list and a second meeting will be scheduled. One third of the commission fee plus any travel expenses if they apply will be due at this time.
At the second meeting, I will meet the client in the location that was agreed upon for the setting of the painting and I will do a photo shoot of the
portrait subject(s) using professional photography and lighting equipment. If the client already has a photo that they wish to use, for example in instances where a posthumous
memorial or a surprise portrait are being considered, this step may be skipped. In the event there are reference materials provided by the client, the client is responsible for having
already procured the appropriate copyrights to the image. A third meeting will be scheduled for the approval of photos.
At the third meeting, the artist will show the client the developed photo proofs from the photo shoot and present them with at least three different portrait
options. In some instances where the background is complex and a combination of many diverse elements needed to be used, the artist will present several ideas using sketches and color
washes. A final composition will be agreed upon at this time and a second third of the commission fee will be due.
At this point I will return to my studio and commence working on the commission. This phase usually takes up to two to three months after it is started. I
welcome my clients to check in with me at any time during the painting process to see the progress of their portrait. It is important for the client to feel a part of this process of
the commission. Please be sure to call ahead of time to schedule an appointment. If traveling to my studio to see the work in progress is not feasible, I will periodically offer
downloaded images of it through email if the client requests me to do so.
Upon completion of the portrait, I will deliver it to the client in person if they are within a reasonable traveling distance from my studio. All final
revisions will be done at that time and when the client is fully satisfied, the remainder of the fee will be due at that time. If the client lives out of my traveling distance,
I will either send pictures by mail or email to the client to preview at that time. They will need to make all final revisions and send their final payment before the painting is
shipped.
Frames and Framing are not included in my services, however as a final courtesy to my clients, I offer assistance in finding that perfect custom frame for
their art work if they request it. I will offer my artistic background and experience in helping them to select a frame which will not only complement the subject in the portrait but
the room in which it is to hang as well.
Reproduction : As a courtesy to my clients, I can also offer photgraphic and\or digital reproductions of the commissioned artwork for a nominal fee. I have highly specialized equipment and techniques which allows me to reproduce oil paintings at the best possible quality available today.
